Colombia: Beyond Dollars and Pesos: The Real Cost of Free Trade in Colombia

August 22, 2015 @ 8:00 am - August 31, 2015 @ 5:00 pm

1,450$

Witness for Peace Delegation to Colombia!

Colombia Delegates with GM strikersIn the past 10 years, foreign investment in Colombia has increased enormously. The U.S-Colombia Free Trade Agreement was implemented in May 2012 despite Colombia’s status as the most dangerous country in the world for trade unionists. Yet many Colombians continue to suffer from ongoing economic, environmental, and cultural violence. International corporations profit while Colombians suffer violence and mass displacement. Visit Colombia, one of the most bio-diverse countries in the world, to learn more about the impact free trade policies have on average citizens, their communities, and their environment, and learn how you can advocate for fair and sustainable trade policies both at home and abroad.

On this delegation, you will:

  • Witness the impact of U.S. corporate and government policies.
  • Visit the port workers and learn about the impact of the U.S.-Colombian Free Trade Agreement and the related Labor Action Plan on them: see ways to build international solidarity on the docks.
  • Stand in solidarity with the people in the urban peace community of “Puente Nayero”, the first urban peace zone in Colombia.
  • Meet with injured GM workers on a 3 year strike, workers in the rose industry, indigenous leaders, women’s rights leaders and sugar cane cutters.
  • Learn how you can advocate for fair and sustainable trade policies both at home and abroad.
